Helicopters serve the public when there is a need to move quickly, and flooring that keeps concrete helipads in safe landing condition plays a vital role in this. Whether in a remote rural area or in a major urban center, the presence of a helipad means that urgent help is readily available.
Specially formulated high performance helicopter floor coatings and markings help keep helipads visible to pilots, while preserving and protecting the concrete slab from the elements. When heliports include helicopter hangar facilities, our U.S.-government approved hangar floor coatings provide the optimal solution.
The speed advantage in flying by helicopter vs. driving is obvious. Industrial, commercial and institutional operations in urban settings place a high priority on helicopter services, even while they often compete for limited helipad space. High-value or time-sensitive cargo can be moved extremely quickly, news outlets can get reporters to the scene on time, and we all learn about rush hour traffic, thanks to helicopter transport. The safety of all these functions depends on helipads being clearly marked with high visibility helicopter flooring and hangar floor coatings.
Whether located on the ground or at the top of an elevated structure, well-functioning and properly coated concrete helipad floors are of critical importance to air ambulance services. The ability to quickly reach and transport patients from remote areas lacking proper medical facilities to regional hospitals and trauma centers saves many lives every year. Helicopters offer high-speed, point-to-point transportation without the constraints of ground-level infrastructure.
During natural disasters, the breakdown of ground transport systems is not uncommon. The delivery of supplies and response teams, as well as the evacuation of the injured and infirmed depends on helicopters. And law enforcement helicopters perform essential search and rescue, chase and surveillance operations.
All these valuable uses of helicopter transport would be put at risk without the right concrete hangar floor coatings and markings that keep helipad floorings safe for landing.
Helipad floors must be visible to helicopter pilots from the air. The exterior concrete pads therefore typically get marked with the letter “H” inside a large solid colored circle to indicate the helicopter landing area. Other required markings tell the pilot the perimeter of TLOF (touchdown and lift off), as well as inform of TLOF size and weight limitations. The surrounding FATO (final approach and takeoff) also gets marked in accordance with FAA and local regulations.
