Differentiating Epoxy Floor Paints and Epoxy Floor Coatings
Epoxy floor paints and epoxy floor coatings, though similar-sounding, are two very different animals. Industrial-grade, high performance epoxy floor coatings typically contain 100% epoxy resin, providing superior durability, chemical and abrasion resistance, moisture tolerance, long-term slip-resistance and many other special characteristics. They tend to be multi-layered systems that are installed over mechanically prepared, shot-blasted or diamond ground concrete slabs. As such, properly selected and installed epoxy floor coatings possess incredible bond strength and long-term adhesion to the substrate, and perform over the long term, even in extreme facility environments.
In contrast, epoxy floor paint is typically a latex-acrylic blend similar to wall paint with just a small amount of epoxy resin added. This type of DIY paint is often a version of “house and deck enamel” and is not intended for commercial facility traffic. It generally requires no substrate preparation other than washing the floor and as such, has a very tenuous bond compared to industrial grade epoxy floor coating systems. Epoxy floor paint is designed for light duty and not expected to endure heavy foot and cart traffic, chemical exposure, frequent cleaning or abrasion.
